In the design of ball fields at the Swain County High School the piping of a stream could not be avoided so, mitigation was necessary.  The scope of work included locating the mitigation site, a natural stream design using bioengineering methods, the stream restoration/construction, and post-construction monitoring.  The restoration site was located on a stream that had been channelized for agricultural reasons.  The design included the re-creation of the correct meander pattern,  step-pool habitat, and the planting of riparian vegetation.  The long-term stabilization of this site was achieved by re-establishing the riparian root system. Such species as American Sycamore, Buttonbush, Dog Hobble, Silky Dogwood and Virginia Sweetspire were planted at this site.

“While conducting the mitigation for new ball fields, AES located the mitigation site, conducted the natural channel design, secured all permits, constructed and vegetated the stream, and monitors the stream restoration.  All of the objectives were met in a timely manner that acceptable to Swain County.  We are very pleased and would use them again.” Robert E.
