Historically, a 54-inch culvert ran through the project site carrying runoff from a shopping center just upslope of the sanctuary. This culvert added sediment and pollutants to a stream that runs into Beaver Lake, which is located below the sanctuary. The scope of work included the removal of 200 lineal feet of the culvert and the creation of an artificial wetland or eco-filter. The wetland was designed so that it could handle the storm flow capacity of the culvert being removed. Stormwater runoff will be used to develop the wetland for nutrient management and sediment control. The wetland was designed with two goals in mind. Trap the sediment and reduce the nutrients and dangerous chemicals entering into Beaver Lake. The sediment is collected on the upper end of the wetland through the creation of a catch basin. The nutrient management was achieved through the planting of native wetland species; such as American Lotus, Arrowhead, Black Elderberry, Black Willow, Buttonbush, Cardinal Flower, Pickerelweed, Red Maple, Softstem Bulrush, Spicebush, Three-Square Bulrush, Water Plaintain, Wild Raisin, and Winterberry. The project is considered a benchmark in the wise stewardship of water resources.
